Sound Off: The Bellfuries

By Austin Sound • Oct 1st, 2007 • Category: Sound Off

The Bellfuries have been lying low for a while, but have recently returned with a revamped lineup and sound. Whereas their earlier work plied more Americana roots, the new Bellfuries, up from a trio to a fourpiece, explode with a classic pop glow, coming to their songs more by way of the Kinks or the Zombies. Vibrant and gorgeous while still maintaining a rockin’ base with occasional shades of rockabilly and garage pop, their new album promises to be one 2007’s late-year sleepers when it emerges this winter. You can check out the excellent new stylings of the Bellfuries below, or better yet catch them live this Sunday, October 7 at the Carousel Lounge along with Dana Falconberry, Adam Ahrens, and Daniel Francis Doyle.

Austin Sound question:
The band has changed direction a lot of the past few years. Would y’all attribute the shift in sound to anything in particular, and what can you tell us about the upcoming album?
Joey: I just write whatever feels good to me, unless I start to write rap or country-pop, then I take a bat to my head for a few minutes until I snap out of it. Our new record sounds great, a nice big, juicy pop record. I got tired of being in a trio, and just wanted to try and write better songs.

Song Introduction:
This will work for any of our songs: “a pop masterpiece, it will make you laugh, cry … be prepared to fall in love all over again”
