Think of this show as your chance to give SXSW a warm farewell and get back into the swing of things. The days of international attention may be over, but local music continues in force this Friday with The Story Of, Peel and The Black. We took a closer look at the show just after the jump.
Like we said, SXSW is official over; downtown is open again, most tourists have left, and you can no longer walk from The Evangelicals to Times New Viking to Why? in the same day like we did. But when all the dust clears, and the trash gets picked up, we still have a slammin’ local scene. And what better evidence of its slamminicity than the show this Friday at the Parish, with…
The Story Of
Singing about your achy-breaky heart is all well and good, but The Story Of have marginally greater ambitions in their songs. To confront themes like the senseless violence that plagues the world is worthy of praise in its own right, but to turn those themes into indie-rock anthems, well that’s a real feat. Our own John Laird took a look at their latest release The World’s Affair which came out last fall.
Peel
To know Peel is to love Peel. We got a hold of their self-titled release back in April of last year. There’s an unrefined intelligence to their songs that isn’t necessarily reminiscent of, but certainly makes us (or at least me) want to listen to The Silver Jews. That’s never a bad thing.
The Black
Fueled by the songwriting of Dave Longoria and Alan Schafer, The Black served up one of the best releases we saw last year, the Donna EP. We liked it enough to put it on our Sound Advice compilation, which ought to be good enough for you!
So take a deep breath, cut off your South by wristband and get back into the swing of things this Friday at the Parish.
