Sound Off: Scorpion Child
By Austin Sound • May 17th, 2008 • Category: Sound Off •Scorpion Child rocks like 1975, like somebody scrawled Physical Graffiti all over southern rock. The local quintet reworks killer bluesy riffs in the unmistakable vein of Zeppelin, while frontman Aryn thrashes his long locks like Robert Plant and moans both soulful and bruising. The group is working on their debut album, which will be out later this year, but catch them live for the real, incomparable Scorpion experience. Scorpion Child will be playing this Saturday, May 17 at Red 7 with an insane lineup that includes Scott Biram and Nashville Pussy.

Profile: Scorpion Child
Year Formed:
2006-(ARYN & ASA) 2007-(full powerhouse lineup)
Members/Instruments played:
ARYN yells at you in prose and plays harp, tambourine and sometimes thinks about pullin’ out the sax. CRUZ beats the shit out of his Ludwig drums. SHAUN plays his bass, and does some modeling as on the side. ASA plays guitar like Ziggy Stardust giving chase to a horde of mystical glass unicorns through a gleeful green forest.
Former Bands/Side Projects:
WOW!
Albums:
THE GREAT SOUTHERN STING will rain down in shards quite soon
Influences:
SOUL FOOD, BANJO’S, MARIJAUNA, RED DRUGS,WHITE DRUGS,BLUE DRUGS,OLD COUNTRY &,SOUL MUSIC.. (DIRTY SHIT!)
Strangest comment or comparison ever made about your music:
Y’all should talk to Peter Hammill from VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR about doing a 4 way record collaboration with them, BUBBLE PUPPY and early nineties band INDIAN SUMMER and have JEFF LYNNE, WILLIE NELSON, BRAIN ENO and HR from BAD BRAINS crying on the lead vocal track, chanting “Don’t blow no fudge buns…” HR was waaaayyy ahead of Bono when it came to the plight of AIDS. HE should’ve been hanging with the Pope.
Favorite local bands:
TIA CARRERA, THOSE PEABODY’S, MANEJO BETO, AMP HEAT….Well many of our friends here in Austin play in rock bands whether seminal or straight forward that influence us. It’s really great to have such an amazing town for it. Bless Waterloo, TX
Favorite local venue:
VICTORY GRILLE circa’ chitterling circuit
Upcoming shows scheduled:
NASHVILLE PUSSY/SCOTT BIREM (rules) may 17th @ RED SEV….Some other stuff in the works and a tour of Mid-America, but THE CHILD needs time to write, and float the river
Shows over the next month that you’re excited to see:
CRUDOS, but that’s the same night as our May 17th show. Scott Birem
Some of your favorite albums from the past year:
CACTUS “One way or another” re-release, THE MARS VOLTA “bedlam in Goliath”, SAVIOURS, BLACK MOUNTAIN’S first record, DUNGEN “Tio Biatr” lp, re-issue of GARY HIGGINS “Red Hash” lp, BLACK WIDOW “Sacrifice” re-issue. ASA still like that ol’ MOTHER LOVE BONE disc….shit, a lot of re-issues man.
Ideal band to open for on a national tour:
MC5, BLACK CROWES, ZZ TOP, SUN RA, CSNY, MOUNTAIN, O BANDO, OS LOBOS, MARCOS VALLE, ALPHA III (Amir Cantusio jr.), LES RALLIZES DENUDES circa ’68, THROBBING GRISTLE…..SHIT YOU NAME IT, just wanna tour!
Austin Sound questions:
Your bio says y’all’s second show was headlining a festival in Colorado - how did that come about, and what was that experience like for being such a new band?
Well, the fest was rad. Most of them were midwest hardcore punk and metal bands that Aryn’s last band Icollide, and some of Cruzer’s old bands Svengali and Pan American Standard had played with so it was a reunion of old friends and good times, the way we like to keep it.
Seeing as how scorpions glow under a blacklight, what happens when Scorpion Child goes under the blacklight?
Jesus and satan birth a baby BIFF TANNEN while on the rag! Not to mention, HUEY LEWIS and PHIL COLLINS finally release their long anticipated SPLIT 7” on SUB POP limited to 500 copies on gray/black swirl
Song Introduction:
THROAT PALACE: It’s a spiritual quest through the mind of a distraught aeronautics technician that becomes challenged by a rocky relationship, engaging in bouts of angry sex with other women resulting in an eventual death to him and his girl.
Sound Off:
SCORPION CHILD sees the error of man through 4 sets of deeply set multi-colored eyes. The coming of night brings forth the faults and follies of all who surround, and in it’s newly blazed tracks, THE CHILD catches the dewdrops of truth. The brucial indignation only conquers in it’s attempts to transgress the common mans’ flaccid perception of nocturnal reality. I give you to know, that the only real truth lies within each meditated breath, and the calculated steps taken by all of its 8 legs while in search of its next victim.
