Weekend Preview

By Austin Sound • Jul 11th, 2008 • Category: Sound Picks

Under the glimmering warm florescent glow of Austin Sound 2.0, we’d like to resurrect one of our favorite lost features: Weekend Preview.

Just as before, each week we’ll take a little time to clue you in on the happenings around town. For each day (Friday - Sunday), we’ll give you our top pick of the night, and then sometimes a couple of alternatives (if the evening is just brimming with activities). So sit tight, we’ve got this under control.

FRIDAY

We just can’t get enough of Martin Crane’s Brazos, and there never seems to be enough to go around. In a vain attempt to satisfy our insatiable cravings, Crane and the rest of the band will be playing four shows on each of the next four Fridays (through August 1st) at Progress Coffee. Each week, different performers will join the band, starting this week with local experimental favorites The Weird Weeds, whose recent album I Miss This we gave high marks. Ex-Dirty Projectors member Nat Baldwin will also be playing.

The price is only $3, and doors are at 9pm. We dare you to find a better deal for a better show.

SATURDAY

After months on the edge of our seats, local folk collective Brothers and Sisters will debut their new album Fortunately to the Austin public Saturday at Club DeVille. The official release date isn’t for a few weeks, but rumor has it the band will be giving away the album for free at the show. You can grab a sample spoon of the album with the songs “The Air Is Getting Thicker” (available here) or “You’re Gone” (available here).

Frank Smith, who you’ll remember moved here last year from Boston following the release of their album Heavy Handed Peace And Love, will be opening the show along with Shapes Have Fangs.

SUNDAY

Local imprint Australian Cattle God Records are hosting Sunday night at Beerland. The label recently added Cat Scientist and The Snake Trap (both of Austin), as well as The International Playboys (of Missoula, MT) to their roster, and are about to send local act Lick Lick (whose album we reviewed here) on a tour of Japan (how jealous are we).

As always, be sure to check back with us next week for more choice events to fill the weekend box in your planner.

These picks not enough? Check out Do512 or Showlist Austin for more comprehensive listings.
