Weekend Preview

By Austin Sound • Jul 18th, 2008 • Category: Sound Picks

Act quickly this weekend, we’ve got a few surprises in store. Tonight (Friday), Simon Joyner is in town for the first time in 10 years, playing the Natrix Natrix House, an incredibly intimate venue for what should be an incredible performance. Saturday is a full bill at Hole in the Wall with soon-to-be-huge Hacienda and other local favorites. Then on Sunday, grab your best sleveless black t-shirt, it’s metal mania with Havoc Dose at Room 710.

FRIDAY

Omaha native Simon Joyner brings his poetic folk styling to town tonight at the Natrix Natrix House. It’s been nearly ten years since Joyner has been through Texas, and this intimate venue is perfect for his confessional brand folk music. This show is one you definitely do not want to miss, unless you’re interested in pondering the lyrics “The only thing worse than blacking out is waking up just where you are” at home alone.

Opening the show are Caleb Fraid (of Houston) and Lonnie Eugene Methe (of Austin, at least for the moment). Doors are at 9pm, and cover is $5. This one comes highly recommended.

SATURDAY

Hacienda are about to get the attention they deserve with their new album (Loud is the Night) coming out in September, and a long tour with Dr. Dog (whose members help out on the new album) planned for the fall. This may be your last chance for a while to see them at such a small venue as Hole in the Wall.

Ripe, who are currently in the studio, Shapes Have Fangs, and the talented Mr. Nic Armstrong round out this full bill. Doors are at 10pm and tickets will run you $5.

SUNDAY

It’s BYO-Antichrist Sunday night at Room 710 with explosive metal acts Havoc Dose, Bukkake Daydream, Unspeakable Things and Bloodpalm. If you’d like to know a little bit more, I’d suggest searching wikipedia for the meaning of “Bukkake.” Doors are at 7pm.

OR

The Hunnies, whose legacy prove that success is only a witty pun away, play their final show at Emo’s. Doors at 8pm.
