A couple weeks ago, the Chronicle reported that the Black Angels had been given about 60 unreleased Roky Erickson recordings to go through and choose 10 to redo for a new album. Today, the Chronicle announced that Okkervil River will also be giving Roky the re-recording treatment as well. This is great news for all involved, and even more so for the fans!
Not only will this hopefully bring Erickson’s music to a whole new generation of indie listeners, but it throws a nice spotlight on Austin’s music scene, both past and present. We can’t wait to hear what Okkervil might do with these songs - while the Black Angels’ remakes seem like a fairly obvious choice, Will Sheff and Co. should have some extremely interesting interpretations of the songs. Okkervil River, of course, teamed up with Erickson for a few songs at this past year’s Austin Music Awards during SXSW (awesomely dubbed Rokkervil!). No word yet on when we might expect to get a taste of the songs, but we’ll keep you posted.
