Weekend Preview

By Austin Sound • Feb 13th, 2009 • Category: Sound Picks

Ah, love is in the air. It’s Valentine’s Day Weekend (consider this your friendly reminder), but no need to worry - we’re still jaded and cynical and bitter. Luckily, we’ve got you covered for your weekend music plans no matter which end of the Valentine’s spectrum you fall on. Friday’s hot ticket is DJ Spooky at the Mohawk, but also some stellar alternatives in the form of Alejandro Escovedo (if you got tickets, cause it’s Sold Out) and Golden Bear’s EP release. Saturday, the White Ghost Shivers unload their annual Valentine’s Day Massacre, but there’s also some more stellar Hip-Hop with a lineup of local all stars at the Parish, and Sunday we’ll climax as Sunset delivers it’s new 7″. (ahem)

Friday

DJ Spooky, Golden Arm Trio, Delicious

We love it when the day before the Valentine’s loving begins with a Friday the 13th, and apparently so does the Mohawk. But their Friday lineup is less frightening than enlightening. Let’s face it, Paul D. Miller is smarter than you, and he’ll also groove your ass off. DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, headlines outside with his genre pushing production, and for this show he’ll be spinning the sounds of Wattstax. He’ll be matched by Graham Reynolds’ equally progressive Golden Arm Trio, an interesting pairing to be sure, but DJ Spooky did remix Reynolds’ score for the film A Scanner Darkly. Delicious opens and locals The Clouds Are Ghosts play inside afterwards. Tickets are $17 tonight at the door, starting at 8:00pm

You might want to pop your head in next door at Club DeVille as well tonight, as local faves Golden Bear unleash their new EP, Everest, along with Pink Nasty, and our featured band this week, The Great Nostalgic.

Saturday

White Ghost Shivers, Strange Attractors, PJ and the Bear

With the exception of Halloween, there is probably no better time to catch the White Ghost Shivers offer up their ribald vaudeville and hot jazz antics than at their Valentine’s Day Massacre Show, so if you’re looking for a little V-Day inspiration, this is your bet for a good time. As for their choosing the garage psychedelics of the Strange Attractors to open, we have no clue, but aren’t complaining as we’re digging the group’s new 7″ split with the Koreans. And if you’ve been paying attention, you already know PJ and the Bear will sweat the Mohawk up with some pure rock & roll.

Also dropping on Saturday is a slew of Austin’s best hip-hop at the Parish, headlined by D-Madness’ amazingly smooth sound, guaranteed to set the mood. Brannen Temple will also be supplying some suave magic, and Rapid Ric and Bavu Blakes thrown down their stellar rhymes and remixes.

Sunday

Sunset, Balmorhea, Silver Pines, Reverse XRays, The Weird Weeds, David Israel

Sunday we’ll be hitching a ride on the Autobus as they release Sunset’s new 7″ Loveshines II and help celebrate Youtube’s Fourth Birthday, which only makes since as Bill Baird is responsible for uploading half of that site’s content. It’s an amazing two stage show that kicks off at 8:30pm at the Church of the Friendly Ghost (Salvage Vanguard Theatre). Silver Pines start with a dreamy country haze, followed by Balmorhea’s preview of their new album All is Wild, All is Silent. David Israel has confounded everyone by finally producing some new must-hear material, and extra oomph is added to the night courtesy of Weird Weeds and Reverse X Rays.
