Sound Off: Loxsly

By Austin Sound • Mar 2nd, 2009 • Category: Featured Story, Sound Off

Loxsly has been a staple of the Austin scene for years now, but with last summer’s magnificent Flashlights EP, the band flashed a promise that they had only hinted at before. Helmed by Cody Ground, the quintet unloads smooth guitar and keys rhythms with the subtle force of Wilco and Death Cab for Cutie. Ground lets his songs linger with an oblique poeticism that is carefully crafted, a catchy melodicism behind his slightly scratchy, Tweedy-esque vocals that nonetheless remains alluringly elusive. The group has had their new LP, Tomorrow’s Fossils, finished for a while now, and will finally be releasing it this summer on vinyl. You can hear the new material this Friday, March 6, at the Scoot Inn as they help the Corto Maltese celebrate the release of their EP along with Brazos and Ian Orth of Learning Secrets.

Austin Sound questions:
Y’all seem to have a fascination with science, at least metaphorically. Do y’all have any kind of science backgrounds?

No, none of us have any science backgrounds but, we’re definitely fascinated by it. All of us really enjoyed the Planet Earth series. I have a really romantic view of what being a scientist is like. I like to think they build machines and discover new species everyday. It’s probably way more boring. My scientist friend Zach observed a Mexican mountain fish 5 hours a day.

What can you tell us about the new album?

We’re really excited about the new album. It has 13 songs that loosely form a story. It’s going to be a vinyl only (digital download) release put out by Little Mafia/ Texas Heat in May.

Song Introduction:

We wrote and recorded “As The Constellation’s Arms Uncurled” a couple years ago. It has some effected samples from old story-time vinyls I found at my grandparents’ house and slowed down drums, on top of our usual instrumentation.

Sound Off:
“Once we built the dreaming machine, we tested out pets the results were amazing. My lab rat didn’t think twice, he conquered the maze with no hesitation. Your dog didn’t move a paw. He sat there and watched the stick fly to him. His thoughts weren’t kind at all. Man’s best friend mocked us humans.”
