The Story Of and GZA at Dickies Battle of the Bands

By Austin Sound • Mar 21st, 2009 • Category: SXSW2009 Live Blog

Even though The Story Of only got to play for fifteen minutes yesterday, (fourteen, if you ask vocalist Christman Hersha) it was the most solid and powerful fifteen minutes since SXSW kicked off earlier this week. These guys wasted no time getting the crowd to kick up the dust on the East Side.

Hersha was glad the performance went so well; they’d been having technical trouble with the mics at their last show that cut into his confidence a bit, he said. In case you’re wondering, it didn’t show. These guys were amazing.

Later, GZA performed with the Black Lips as his backing band. Turns out the Lips can’t really bring the funk, causing some onstage awkwardness, but GZA is still genius even with a few small hitches. Seeing him resurrect the essence of ODB in “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” is always worth it.
