Weekend Preview

By Austin Sound • Mar 27th, 2009 • Category: Featured Story, Sound Picks

We’ve had the week to recover and return to the real world after SXSW, but this is Austin, so even after the last week’s whirlwind, there is still a ton of live music not to be missed going on this weekend. Get back on your horse, boy, because this weekend the Dicks reunion hits Red River, there’s an ideal local lineup Antone’s, some country and soul shaded shows on Saturday, and some experimental goodness on tap for your Sunday comedown. Here it is, your weekend preview, “still is still movin’” post-SXSW edition!

Friday

The Dicks, World Burns To Death, Masshysteri, You People, Shootin Pains

One of the best parts of SXSW 09 was the Dicks reunion at the Austin Music Awards, though that only lasted about 12 minutes. So were expecting the punk icons to absolutely blow away Room 710 when they hit the bar tonight. They’ll be leading the chaos that includes local hardcore havocs Wold Burns to Death and Swedish rockers Masshysteri. There’s an added treat if you get there by 8:00pm as well, in the form of the Shootin’ Pains, the twisted country project that includes the Dicks’ Buxf Parrott on banjo and Pat Deason on drums.

If you’re in the mood for something more contemporary though, you can’t do better this weekend than the lineup put together at Antone’s, headlined by Austin’s indie powerhouse White Denim. It seems like it’s been a while since the trio has unloaded for a proper local club set, and they’ve got two not-to-be-missed openers as well. We’ve been singing the praises of Harlem’s brand of infectious, sloppy rock for a while, and Built By Snow’s new album MEGA is fantastically nerdy in that Weezer-meets-Devo kind of way. Show starts at 10:00pm with a $10 cover.

Saturday

Dan Dyer, Suzanna Choffel

Saturday you can chillax a little to the soulful indie sounds of Suzanna Choffel and Dan Dyer at Lambert’s. Choffel seductively breathy vocals and swirling jazz and rock arrangements recently captured her the Austin Music Award for Best Indie Artist, and she seems to be blowing up all over the place, so catch her in the intimate setting while you can. Dan Dyer, meanwhile, always delivers a stunning set behind his smooth croon.

Over at the Hole in the Wall, meanwhile, you can check out new material from The Monahans, whose epic, brooding country-shades will sit well alongside headliner Li’l Cap’n Travis’ poppier direction. Also on tap is Trucker Slang.

Sunday

Calm Blue Sea present live score for Fritz Lang’s Siegfried

We love it when the Alamo Drafthouse brings in local bands to score their movies, and this Sunday’s screening of Fritz Lang’s Siegfried promises to be a good one with the Calm Blue Sea providing the sound to the vision. The film starts at 7:00pm at the downtown location. Is there a better way to end the weekend than kicking back at the Alamo with great live music and a classic flick. Yeah, we thought not.

Unless of course it’s going to the Church of the Friendly, which by a vote we have decided does indeed count as going to church on Sunday, so you can tell your folks you’ve finally found religion. The Salvage Vanguard Theater this Sunday brings experimental sets from San Francisco’s Amir Coyle, Florida’s Yellow Crystal Star, and local avante-ist Doug Ferguson.
