At Least Six Wounded in Red River Shootout Outside Spiro’s

By Austin Sound • May 29th, 2009 • Category: News

APD is still trying to untangle exactly what happened last night on Red River as two men apparently opened fire outside of Spiro’s. According to Fox News, at around 2:15am “the two men walked up to the crowd with guns and began firing, keeping their guns low to the ground, consequently most of the injuries sustained were to people’s legs and one woman was shot in the stomach.” Fox also quotes the owners of Spiro’s as saying that a rap group missed their set earlier in the night and were asked to leave when they arrived, but later returned at the time of the shooting. Whether that means it was the group that shot up the joint, we’re not sure, but police reportedly have the names of both suspects.

[Update: New 8 Austin reports that the alleged assailants were members of the group L.G. Allstarz, who had been scheduled to open the night at Spiro's, and when asked to leave, went to their cars and came back packin'.

Because we, of course, get all our news from twitter, there was mass panic and craziness that lit up the interwebs early this morning. The Boxing Lesson were playing a show at Emo’s and loading out when the shooting occurred. There was supposedly blood on their van. Bill-mates Gliss high-tailed it from the scene and wrote the following later on their site (thanks to Nite’s for first posting about this!):

So tonight we played at Emo’s in Austin. The night was amazing, until we started loading out and somebody started shooting. People were screaming, and running into the club to hide. Our van was right in the front, so we ran out there and took off. There were people in the street bleeding everywhere and screaming. It was the craziest thing I have ever seen. We are at the hotel right now. Just spoke to our friends who were also loading out. They are not allowed to leave because there is blood all over their van - Evidence….

We didn’t even check our van, we just jumped in and drove down a one-way street, in the wrong direction, but we just needed to get away. There was a guy right by our van screaming ” I have been shot, I have been shot”…

It’s so crazy , the shooting happened right as we opened the door. If we had gone out there just 5 secs earlier, we would have been shot. That’s mental…..

It’s a bit quiet in the hotel room now.

Happy to be alive.

It seems that thankfully no one was killed, but now we undoubtedly have to brace for a whole bunch of new measures for Red River and the Downtown area, which given the way things have gotten recently, may be some welcome attention to the problems. We’re just sad it may have to take something this extreme to finally get the city on the problem!
