Spiro’s Voluntarily Closes

By Austin Sound • Jun 6th, 2009 • Category: News

On Friday afternoon, one week after the shooting outside its doors that left eight bystanders injured, Spiro’s on Red River has decided to shut down. We applaud the decision, for no matter where the blame for this particular incident may lie, it is clear that Spiro’s had become an unruly nuisance for APD, the Red River area, and the downtown music scene. This week’s Chronicle laid into the club for its problematic rap sheet, as well as their negligent philosophy of what happens outside the venue proper is not their responsibility.

The Statesman quotes TACB lieutenant Jimmy Zuehlke that “They are out of business as of today. They just thought it would be in their best interest to just close down the business.” The club, which has been suspended from operation for the past week, likely would have faced forced closure behind the District Attorney’s attempt to pursue nuisance abatement charges with APD, and it is unclear at this point whether the club will still face potential charges or maybe even possible civil suits. Clearing out of the former venue is already underway this weekend.
