Now this just sounds like fun! We’re used to watching our favorite local artists sweat it out onstage, but now we get to see just how they do in real competition. Starting tonight, July 30, Club DeVille will be hosting a three day basketball tournament between Clubs and Bands, featuring teams of five going head to head to be crowned, what, Kings of the Velvet Rut Court? But there’s a $500 prize for the winner! You can bet some hungry bands are reviewing their Leroy Smith basketball drill videos right now. Among the bands fielding teams and taking to the hardwood (asphalt?) of Club DeVille this weekend are the Black Angels, Danny Malone, Grand Champeen, La Snacks, Frank Smith/Bankrupt and the Borrowers, and Blaise Faire. They’ll be going up against some of the folks on the business side of local music representing club deville Emo’s, Mohawk, Jackalope, Sidebar, and Waterloo Records. Too bad we want get to see the Gary square off against the Beauty Bar! You can buy some cheap tickets to watch the “competition” for only $5, or $7 for a weekend pass. The tournament will run from tonight through Saturday. So who are you putting your money on? We think we’ll take Grand Champeen, though we bet Emo’s knows how to throw a few elbows under the net.
