Oh lord, it’s like the Sixties all over again! What started out as friendly and fun and awesome has now turned bitter. Bring in the lawyers! Two years ago, the Black Angels and Live Music Capitol started up the Austin Psych Fest the weekend before SXSW, held up on Burnet Road at the Red Barn. Last year, it expanded to 3 days and took place down on Sixth Street at the Radio Room (what’s up with that place, btw? We were promised a new venue!). But today the Chronicle reports that Adam Demetri of the events company Live Music Capitol is suing the Black Angels over the name. Um, wtf guys? Really? First of all - yeah, suing a band is always a worthwhile endeavor, and second, it’s not like this is ACL or even Fun Fun Fun Fest for that matter. It’s just a damn party! Everybody chill out. The really hilarious part of all this, though, is that as the Black Angels prepare for Austin Psych Fest 3 next April, Demetri is booking another version of the event around the same time that he’s calling the “Official Psych Fest,” and dropping hints that he’s going to pull the Doors’ Robby Krieger as a headliner. So, it looks like we might have a Psych Fest face-off after SXSW. We’re not sure if we can handle that much acid, but if the Black Angels’ goal was to return Austin to its Sixties Psych peak, we guess this is one way to do it.

Sue the Black Angels??? WTF? If they want to distance themselves from Adam, they have good reason. This guy is an idiot, and I can’t even believe he’s taken it to the point that the fuckin’ Chronicle is reporting that he’s going to sue them. Nice one…
I don’t think any of us are informed enough to make a judgement over who is, or is not, an idiot in this situation.
The girl that operates the drone machine in Black Angels is doable though. That’s all I gotta say about them.

Adam D threatens to sue everyone he works with. It’s official he’s the grand douche of all douches.
I don’t know.. Adam has his faults, no doubt about it. But, he is trying.. constantly trying to do something cool and special around town.. Only to have folks like the Black Angels (who are among the most overrated bunch of douche bags in Austin) steel thunder.
It’s as easy to take candy from a baby as it is to drone on one chord for 5 minutes.

I don’t think the Black Angels are trying to “steel thunder”, whatever that means, and they are incredibly nice (from my experience) folks who play music that a lot of people enjoy (not B2, but you know what they say about opinions). Seems to me they are moving on from a partnership that didn’t work out with Adam / LMC with this festival, and he’s clearly not very happy about it.
I just hope that the festival doesn’t suffer from all this drama, because a lot of great bands were booked last year and it was a great time.

Did anyone ever buy/hear the BA’s 2nd album? I actually enjoyed the EP a lot… but Passover was too much of the same for my tastes.
I was hoping to hear that they got a lot more interesting on the second album, but somehow until this moment, I forgot that they even HAD a second album released.
I’ll go to whichever one the Black Angels are playing at.. I flew out last year with a bunch of friends and had a great time!
Overall, this is a bit silly. Adam may have a case here, but the guy is no fun to work with as he simply doesn’t have it together and thinks too much of himself. It’s a shame as well as his ideas are pretty good. It’s a case of all talk and no walk here. I honestly don’t care who puts the show on, but from my personal experience, The Black Angels will put together a much better show as they have the ability to organize and execute. Adam simply does not have this ability.
