By Austin Sound • Jul 2nd, 2008 • Category: News

Ah, Austin’s DJs, giving us some hot summer grooves to cool down. Prince Klassen has put together his latest mix, which he’s simply calling the “Boogie Mix” and uploaded it for fans to download for free. If you’re broke like us, we suggest you go buy a bottle of champagne, invite some folks over, and throw on this mix, and viola! You have your own private bottle service club. Hey, we’re just here to help.

The mix was made live, or, as Klassen declares: “All the way live from hot as fack texas! No overdubs, no edits, all live… Sure its on Serato, but I have the records to prove it douche elitists. My mp3s weigh a ton.” Word. Tracklist and download below:

By Austin Sound • Jun 24th, 2008 • Category: News

Next week, Willie Nelson opens up his new combination music theater/bio-diesel truck stop up at Carl’s Corner just north of Waco. It’s gonna be like a drive-thru Branson, Missouri, except for Redneck hippies instead of their parents!

The place gets it’s official grand opening on July 3, and Willie has assembled a stellar lineup to break the joint in. Among those performing the all day event are Willie, Merle Haggard, and Ray Price, who together transform into the miasmic country force called “the Last of the Breed,” as well as onery outlaws David Allan Coe and Ray Wylie Hubbard. As if that weren’t enough though, the Statesman is reporting that the July 3 show will be FREE!

By Austin Sound • Dec 12th, 2007 • Category: News

Bracing for those awkward holiday thank yous for homemade sweaters and packs of tube socks? (Actually, we kinda appreciate the socks). Well, Okkervil River has ensured that your digital stocking will at least be filled with one treat you’ll appreciate this year by offering a free downloadable mixtape of songs culled from live performances over the past two years.

The nine songs on the Golden Opportunities Mixtape include one Okkervil original (”Listening to Otis Redding At Home During Christmas”), and covers ranging from Randy Newman’s wonderful “Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear” to John Cale’s “Antarctica Starts Here.” There is even a version of Serge Gainsbourg’s “I Came Here to Say I’m Going Away” translated from the French by Will Sheff himself.

Free “Road to Austin” Concert set for May 19

By Austin Sound • May 2nd, 2007 • Category: News

We have to confess to doing our share of grandstanding for the Austin music scene – after all, we think it’s amazing enough to devote an entire site (and more time than we probably have)to. So we are, of course, fully in support of the Free concert at Auditorium Shores on May 19 aimed at capturing and creating “a heightened level of understanding and excitement about the how and why Austin, Texas, has become known as the ‘live music capital of the world.’” Sound’s like our kind of event! Oh, did we mention it’s free?

8/31/06
Gnarls Barkley, looking to supplant OutKast in this year's unlikely and most crazily outfitted duo category, has announced their playing a show at Stubbs before ACL, and their giving away the tickets. There is, of course a catch. To get tickets to the September 13 party, you have to prove your fanaticism. Starting tonight and running through September 9, the Gnarly crew will be stalking various places around town and if you have a band sticker or the below sign on your car, you're in.
