KOOP Benefit Tonight at Beauty Bar

By Austin Sound • Jan 28th, 2008 • Category: News

Once again Austin Sound is helping Soundcheck Magazine get KOOP back on their feet with the weekly Monday night residency at the Beauty Bar. KOOP is back on the 91.7 frequency during the day thanks to some local stations that have loaned them equipment and space, but still have a long way to go to recover from last months arson attack. Cover tonight is $3 for the show and we are asking for a $2 donation to KOOP with the extra bills.

On tap for tonight’s show is Ladyfingers, one Adam Weiner who has recently relocated his Tav Falco-esque rockabilly sound down to Austin, and the elaborate audio-visual sweep of Sorne.

This past weekend, community radio station KOOP, the daytime half of 91.7 FM, was struck by fire, which officials have now determined was intentionally set. The fire is the third to strike the radio station, which was burned out of its downtown headquarters in 2006 by two blazes and moved into a new space on Airport Boulevard this past year.

According to the Statesman, the fire has caused an estimated $3,000 in damage to the building and equipment, but thankfully no one was hurt.

KOOP Pledge Drive in Full Swing

KOOP, Austin’s community radio station and daytime holders of the 91.7 FM frequency, are currently holding their Fall pledge drive and need your support. Home of such great music programs as Ear Candy, Around Town Sounds, and the Country, Swing and Rockabilly Jamboree (to name but a few), the station is still trying to get back on its feet after the 6th Street fires that destroyed their home last Spring. The station is temporarily setting up shop at the KMFA Building on North Lamar, but is hoping to soon be able to move into a new studio with continued help from the Austin Community.

Over 75% of KOOP’s annual budget comes from individual and local business support and contributions are, of course, tax deductible. You can pledge by calling during any of their programs this week at 472-5667 or online at any time. You can become a full member for only $25.00, though any contribution is certainly welcome.
