Skiesfalling Offers Free LP Download

By Austin Sound • Jul 2nd, 2009 • Category: News

Way back in 2007, Skiesfalling released the debut, Mindbreaths from their EXPLP series, which caught our attention with their mix of ambient, electro and post-rock instrumentalism. While all the sessions were recorded between 2005-2006, they have just offered up the second LP in their series, Heroic Dose for free download, and are prepping the third and final release in the series, called The Intelligent Other for this winter.

The group explains the series thusly: “The EXPEP series is a post conception meaning that we came up with the idea to do this series after we had many exceptional, improvisational recorded pieces from our studio that in turn would be very diificult to replicate into rehearsed performances. These pieces simply blossomed out of the moment with no pre-written parts or even a discussion as to what we were attempting to do. Improvisation in its purest sense of tapping in and letting go. These pieces also fare more toward the ambient and experimental vein of Skiesfalling’s sound.”

Every now and then we have to step back and take stock of some releases that have slipped by us recently. Most recently, we’ve felt the need to give some belated attention to Ghost of the Russian Empire’s impressive With Fiercest Demolition EP, Skiefalling’s debut of experimental ambient tones and, as they get ready to release a new album, Tia Carrera’s self-titled release from last October. So although all three of these were released last year, they have endured well into this one, and we didn’t want to let them get by without giving them some notice. And so we offer you: The Review Roundup!

Austin experimental ambientists and purveyors of what we like to call aural codeine Skiesfalling have just put up a new video for their song “Slips Into the Night.” Although we usually prefer to not go gentle, we might just be induced to follow Skiesfalling about anywhere. The video was shot and directed by filmmaker Kevin Ford

The song is a new tune that doesn’t appear on their debut EP Mindbreaths, which offers only three songs but clocks in at just a shade under 30 minutes. The group will be playing Emo’s Lounge this Thursday January 25 with Many Birthdays, and will also be apart of the second Bliss Out event, which will take place at Mohawk on February 3 with Yellow Fever and For Those Who Know. Bliss Out indeed.
