There’s not much to say after you tell the Mayor [Lee Leffingwell] that everything’s going “really ‘effing well” and he walks awkwardly away from you after a proclamation that it’s official Danny Malone Day, but Malone still manages to somehow come through. With blues-rock protégés the Steps and School of Songs in tow, Malone managed to put on a show last month at Stubb’s full of choreographed lights and dance, pomp, and his trademark folk rock worthy of a day of his own deserving. It’s about time we stop talking about the Steps as one of the most exciting young bands in Austin, and acknowledge that they have become one of the city’s hottest acts, period. Their eponymous debut was a statement, and we have a feeling their future lies beyond the incestuousness of our little scene here. But check out the new video for their song “Dagger,” which was shot out in Granger by Jesse Hill and the always excellent team at Super!Alright! The Steps will be back in Austin on Wednesday, February 19, when they hit Stubb’s with Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights.
